Welcome to the college of Leonard. A division of the Kaleidoscope Factory, it is located next door at 106 South Main Street in Pomeroy.
So, what's this silliness all about? I taught adult education classes at Iowa Central Community College for 10 years and children's T.A.G. programs for the University of Iowa a few summers. I miss that. Over the years I've encountered a lot of people who said "I wish I knew how to..." I've also encountered a lot of people with interesting skills that others would like to learn. My objective is to put those people together at the same time in the same place - The College of Leonard. Another influence, from my Denver years, The Colorado Free University has some good examples of other classes I'd like to hold here. The concept is old. Essentially it is a folk school. Here's a Wikipedia article about them. If you have a passion you'd like to share, please contact me.
The idea about holding classes here first came about because I got a glass kiln and discovered that people would like to learn how to fuse glass. Clary Illian, the artist who first inspired me 30 some years ago to live the life I live, advised me to have pottery classes when I visited her again a while back. So, there will be pottery classes. The first faculty member is Regina Smith. A local optometrist has asked for time and space to hold eye care education classes. Look for some alternative energy education later on from Ed Woolsey. We're hoping to put together a conference in Pomeroy.
Also, we'll be doing birthday party classes and arts and craft day camps. You'll be able to sign up your child(ren) and friends for a unique experience. And remember, there's no age limit on being a kid.
e-mail me from here if you're interested in taking some class(es) or booking a birthday party or day camp.
e-mail me from here if you're interested in teaching some class(es) or being the creative director for a birthday party or day camp.
Please provide all the details you can. Please provide complete contact information and any help you can give us in what times would work for you.
Patty Mefferd and Paul Johnson have worked diligently to bring about the new facility. Below are some pictures of the progress:
